April 2, 2010 Lake Silverwood

I made the reservation to this very popular lake six months ago without even thinking that it was going to be the Easter weekend. I only looked at the kids' school calendar and noted that it was their spring vacation so I thought it was a good idea to get away.

Well, it didn't turn out to be as great as I thought it would be. First off, we missed the general conference. We tried to listen to the internet broadcast but the signal wasn't too great so it was very difficult. We do have all the sessions recorded so we'll try to make the most of it.

Lake Silverwood is about 120 miles east of Simi Valley. There is a convenient McDonalds at the 138 exit. As you take the 138 there's about 4 miles of hair-pin turns. They're not too bad because there are no ravines and yet Roger thought he'd commit murder because I wouldn't stop complaining about his driving (so what's new?).

After taking the wrong turn at the lake exit (dirt road and scary drops and all that), we arrived at our campsite #40. I must say I actually made a good choice without having any idea and just going by the description given by the reservation system. When people say that Lake Silverwood is windy - believe it. It was windy. The pictures below were all from Saturday.

On Sunday, we tried to do a little bit of fishing. The attendant at the marina didn't even want to charge us the usual $3 fee for fishing on the dock because it was too windy. Went back to camp after 2 hours. Roger and Lee read from their lap top and phones that there was a 20% chance of rain Sunday night and Monday rain after 8AM. So, Roger and I packed most of our outdoor camp stuff and had the wisdom to put them all in the van just in case the forcasted rain came. Let's just say it was 100% pouring rain and wind starting Sunday night. Too bad we didn't take a picture of our once nice campsite that turned into stream. We were too busy breaking camp in the rain.

Roger was bored so he started playing with his phone instead. You'd think from looking at Roger's wardrobe
he was in the Alaskan tundra - not quite that cold but enough.

I wonder if they've invented an app on how to catch a striper. We were using every recommended bait including
very stinky anchovies but alas - no stripers.

Lee decided if he couldn't catch any fish he might as well sleep.

Take note even when asleep Lee thought he should at least hold onto his fishing rod.

Bablyn and Sahara decided to take a nap too. Mel, Lyn and Lee arrived at the marina dock at 6AM on Saturday to start fishing.

Sorry I would have taken a frontal photo but the water was too cold. Look at the background - that would be Lee.

Mel as usual so hard at fishing, you're a die hard bro! We'll have to try this lake when it's a little warmer.

Roger here trying to see what the fishes were doing. The water was so clear you could actually see quite deep.

Roger's first catch. Isn't he cute? As soon as Roger let this little guy go, Roger and Lee saw huge fishes go after it.

Finally, Mel caught a fish! Note where he hooked it - doesn't matter, a catch is a catch!

Doesn't that look like milfish? Roger says it's a carp. Maybe, but I say it's a brown milfish - or is that a chocolate milkfish?

Roger finally started catching fish and he wouldn't stop catching them. Our fellow fisherman on the other side kept saying "Again? Not another one?".

I finally caught one and it wasn't a carp - it was a crappie. I cooked this fish that same night but it was too fishy, not edible. I think Roger didn't remove all the slime. Yuck!!!

Hey, Babylyn also caught a carp. Notice who's not pictured here with a fish? Lee actually got skunked for the first time in his fishing life!!!
